Bekele Shiferaw
World Bank (Washington, D.C., USA)Bekele Shiferaw is a Development and Resource Economist with extensive global experience in analysis of poverty, inequality, gender and technology adoption, and policies for environment and sustainable human development. Dr Shiferaw joined PEP as Executive Director in October 2013. He comes from the CGIAR system where he served in various capacities for over 12 years. Most recently, he was the Principal Development Economist and the Director of the Socioeconomics Program at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), based in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to that (2005-2008), he was the a Regional Program Leader (Eastern and Southern Africa) for Socioeconomics and Policy research at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). From 2001-2004, he served ICRISAT in South Asia (based in India) as a Development and Resource Economist working on poverty, food security, vulnerability and environmental policy issues.
His wide research interest spans the dynamics of poverty, inequality and socioeconomic change; policies for inclusive growth and sustainable societies; gender, assets and development; technology adoption; policy and program evaluation; measurement of development and environmental impacts; analysis of market relations and trade; analysis of policy and institutional innovations for remedying market failures; and development pathways and strategies for managing risk and vulnerability in developing countries.
Dr Shiferaw has a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals of Agricultural and Enviromental Economics including the Journal of Agricultural Economics, Ecolological Economics, Food Policy, Agricultural Economics, World Development, and Environment and Development Economics.
