IZA/FCDO ONLINE Development Economics Course

January 15, 2024
March 18, 2024
ONLINE

Organizers: Oriana Bandiera (London School of Economics and IZA), Annabelle Krause-Pilatus (IZA)

Event Manager: Viola Hartmann

IZA/FCDO Programme on Gender, Growth and Labor Markets in Low-Income Countries (G²LM|LIC) sponsored the ONLINE EVENT: “Development Economics Course,” which took place from January 15 to March 18, 2024.

The course explored why fundamentally equal humans across countries experience very different standards of living. Its aim was to make cutting-edge research in development economics accessible to anyone curious about the field. Modeled after the award-winning undergraduate development course at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the programme was based entirely on research articles.

Although designed for undergraduate students, the course also welcomed applications from graduate/post-graduate students and professionals from both the public and private sectors. It was open to residents of the eligible African and Asian countries listed, and required no prerequisites beyond curiosity. The course was offered free of charge and taught in English.

Running over ten weeks, the structure included a one-hour lecture and a one-hour tutorial each week. Lectures in weeks 1 and 10 were held live on Zoom, while those in weeks 2–9 were provided as videos. Tutorials in weeks 2–9 took place live on Zoom, with participants assigned to small groups. Readings and problem sets required an estimated 2–8 hours per week, and all live sessions were held between 7am–12 noon UK time.

The course had originally been announced for September–November 2023 but was rescheduled due to circumstances beyond our control.
